Understanding feelings can be tough. Sometimes, you may not feel like yourself. You could be sad, or angry, or annoyed, and you may not know why. It might even seem like these thoughts will never stop. Everyone gets like that sometimes, and that’s okay. It’s normal to have ups and downs, and you can feel a bit differently every day. When things get tough, it’s good to know what to do.

Getting to know your mind and body

Your feelings are a big part of who you are. They are a helpful way for your mind and body to tell you what they need, and what to do about it.

When you are happy, you might have a light feeling in your body. This tells you that things are going well or you’re having fun, and that whatever is making you happy must be a good thing. If you’re angry, you might feel like shouting, or your body might feel tense and tight. This could be telling you that something seems unfair, someone is being mean, or you’ve done something you think is wrong and you’re mad at yourself.

When you have these feelings, you can try and work out what might be going on and who can help you—like a parent, teacher, or a friend.

A lot of things can change how you’re feeling. Maybe you had a fight with a friend or your parents, lost a pet, or you’re worried about school. Learning about what makes your brain tick is a great way to help yourself, or find some help, when those things happen.

It’s also important to know that there are people who can help.

Talking about how you’re feeling

If you feel like you are sad or angry a lot, you can talk to a parent or an adult you trust. Talking to a friend about how you’re feeling can also help to get things off your chest.

You may not know what to say, but this is something you can learn and practice. You could start by talking about how your body feels, like saying “I feel sick in my stomach” or “My heart is beating too fast”.

Putting your feelings into words helps you to become more aware of them. You may be worried about what other people think; you don’t have to be. Everyone has a tough time sometimes, even adults. Find adults you trust to help you understand your feelings and find helpful things to do.
